Bonding Squares: The Power of Scent

Bonding squares are a simple yet meaningful way for caregivers to connect with their babies while in the NICU. Even in the earliest days of life in both premature and full-term babies, scent is one of the most developed senses. These soft fabric squares help nurture that vital connection through smell.

One square is worn close to the caregiver’s skin to absorb their unique scent, while the other is placed with the baby in the isolette. Each day, the squares are swapped—giving the baby the comfort of their caregiver’s scent and allowing the caregiver to feel closer to their little one through the baby’s scent.

This gentle exchange supports emotional connection and helps strengthen the bond during a time when physical closeness may be limited.
