After 8 years of trying to have a baby and 2 miscarriages, I finally had a successful and relatively easy pregnancy until 28 weeks. At that point, my water broke in the morning on my way to work. I was immediately sent to (and then hospitalized) at Abington Hospital with the hope I could keep the baby (we didn’t know what we were having) in until 34 weeks. However, after 11 days of hospital bed rest in the MOM unit, the baby started showing signs of distress, so the doctors decided it needed to be born via caesarean delivery right away.

Our son Quinn was born at 30 weeks on December 20th weighing just 3 pounds, 10 ounces. He had a very bad infection, a Grade II brain bleed, a hole in his heart, was anemic and later developed jaundice. The day after he was born, the doctors at Abington told us that he was actually very sick, his white blood cell count was extremely low, and that they had given him everything they could, but it was now up to him to fight to live. Quinn fought hard and after 52 days of great care in Abington’s NICU, he finally came home weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

Once home, he started to grow quickly and loved to eat (and sleep thank goodness). Because of the brain bleed and some left-side weakness, he received amazing physical therapy through our county for free, which really made such a difference in developing his motor skills. Within his 1st year of life, both the brain bleeds and the left-sided weakness resolved. He also was no longer anemic and the hole in his heart closed on its own.

Today, he is a thriving, sweet, healthy toddler who loves to sing,
“read” books and play with others. He has graduated from physical therapy and the cardiologist and is meeting the milestones of
his age. We are beyond grateful for all the people who helped
us to have him as well as those who made it possible for him to overcome his challenging beginning!
